Welcome to my scrumptious, stylish, spooky, happy place!

Trois Mec

Trois Mec

When I first heard two years ago about the opening of Trois Mec by the holy food trinity Chef Ludo Lefebvre (formerly of L'Orangerie, Bastide and his brilliant popup series, LudoBites) and Chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (of Animal, Son of a Gun, and the newly opened Jon and Vinny's), I was almost literally salivating at the idea of snagging a ticket for a table. Somehow I turned around and two years had flown by, and I still hadn't visited the restaurant -- though I had enjoyed its next door sister bistro, Petit Trois. Given my mother's Francophile nature, nothing seemed more fitting for her 60th birthday celebratory dinner than finally enjoying Trois Mec's 5-course prix fixe menu, complete with wine pairing. With its convivial waitstaff who warmly greet each patron with a welcoming "Bonjour!" upon entrance, its charmingly constant playlist of French hip hop, and the still-lingering Raffallo's Pizza sign out front, Trois Mec lived up to even my wildest expectations. With artfully plated small bites and dishes packed full of both flavor and ingenuity, Lefebvre's, Shook's, and Dotolo's fine dining-meets good eating approach to their restaurant is evident from the first sip of pea and mint tea to the last bite of Carolina gold rice pudding with brown butter, topped with an egg yolk. We were compelled, of course, to opt-in for the evening's supplement to the prix fixe menu -- Spot Prawn Ceviche in a magically colorful bowl rimmed with a paste of purple Okinawa potato -- and a unanimous hit amongst my family was the smoked eel with white chocolate mashed potatoes. Our meal made it clear why Trois Mec repeatedly tops yearly "best restaurant" lists (Los Angeles Magazine, LA Weekly, etc), and I think that I can easily pledge that two more years will not pass by before I visit the restaurant for a second time!
